In his study on the Book of James, David Jeremiah shows readers that a life lived with focused devotion to God should make a genuine difference in the way a person lives.
Your creed should determine your conduct. This series will help you tap into God’s supernatural strength to meet the challenges of your life. It is for those who desire God’s wisdom and who intend to walk the rough road to true Christian maturity. For James, the proof of profession was in the living. It still is today.
Most of us tend to think that the best times in life are the times that are full of happiness and free of stress. But the Bible has a different view. It says that in our trials – in our time of uncertainty and suffering – we should find joy. Why? Because in our trials we build our faith and come to know even more of the goodness and greatness of God. Covers James 1:1-12.
Temptation to sin is nothing new. It started all the way back in Genesis 3 when Adam and Eve desired and ate the fruit which God had forbidden. And ever since then we have continued to struggle to keep God’s law. But He has not left us helpless. God in His mercy and grace has given us His Word so that we can combat the devil and the temptations that he lays before us. Covers James 1:13-18.
Some things never change. People regard the rich and disregard the poor today in much the same way they did in biblical times. But we know that God does not consider the status or appearance of a man in His judgment. God sees the heart and judges us based on who we are, not what we are. Covers James 2:1-13.
Missouri is known as the “Show-Me State.” It is a sentiment reflecting the line of thinking that actions speak louder than words. Believe it or not, Christianity shares this sentiment. Simple declarations of faith mean nothing if your actions undermine the faith you profess. Faith is better seen than spoken. The Bible calls us to a faith that is visible – that is acted out. Covers James 2:14-26.
In the previous lesson, we say that when it comes to faith, actions speak louder than words. But that is not to diminish the power of the words that come out of our mouths. The words we speak carry great weight too. We can destroy lives or restore them with the flick of a tongue. As believers, how cautious we must be then about the things we say each day. Covers James 3:1-12.
It seems like there is no shortage of financial advice to be consumed in the modern world. People obsess over their ability to retire and enjoy the wealth they have earned in their lifetime. But the money we are blessed with is not to be used solely for our comfort and pleasure. God watches how we spend the money He gives us, and one day He will judge us on our use of it. Covers James 5:1-6.
We are a society built for speed. We have freeways so we can get places faster. We have high-speed wireless Internet so we can work from anywhere in the world. We have things to do, and we don’t appreciate anyone getting in our way. But the Bible says we need to develop a spirit of patience, for when trials come calling, patience is what will allow us to ride out the storm. Covers James 5:7-12.
We pray before we eat. We pray before we go to bed. We pray probably two or three times in church on Sunday. But is that all it should be? No! We are to be in constant prayer for every need and request in our lives. And if we are not in need, we should be constantly and prayerfully praising God in our hearts. Covers James 5:13-20.
